Jonathan Lane

This view of the River Thames looking east towards Waterloo Bridge and the City of London captures the billowing visual turmoil of the early morning sky and its myriad reflections in the broken surface of the river. The artist's vantage point is Hungerford Bridge, and the dome of St Paul's Cathedral is at the centre of the distant skyline. As sunrise begins to define form and distance, and flood the scene with refracting light and colour, the agitated brushwork becomes a semi-abstract shorthand for the transitory and unstable moments after dawn when the early light is still crystallizing and resolving into day.
